Not putting the history of our Club in second place, the news about an article about Buckeye Bargains in the November issue of Columbus Monthly Magazine takes top honors! It highlights Buckeye Bargains on p. 24. Here is what Karen Dertinger's email said:
"Check out page 24 under "Bargain bits" in this Nov.'s Columbus Monthly. Rhonda [Bova] set up the article request for Buckeye Bargains and Dan did a great job. I asked him to put in the UWC website and he did along with all the info and a picture to boot!"
And now on with our history...
Our Club is celebrated its 116th anniversary in October. It is an exciting time for us.
This year the Big 10 universities are welcoming a 12th university, the University of Nebraska, into the conference and likewise, we are welcoming the University of Nebraska's Women's Club into our Big 10 Women's Club group. Surprisingly, this is not the first link Ohio State or the UWC has had with Nebraska.
The founder and first president of our Club, Flavia Camp Canfield, came with her husband James when he left his position as Chancellor at the University of Nebraska to become the 4th president of The Ohio State University.
Jane Denney, on the 25th anniversary of the Club in 1920, wrote a wonderful piece that describes the beginnings of our Club, and the woman who brought those ideals with her from Nebraska. James Canfield left the University of Nebraska on September 1,1895, for his new post as the 4th president of The Ohio State University. By October, in less than a month and a half, Flavia had not only managed the family move but somehow found the time to gather her new friends and form the Faculty Club (our former name).
